Foliation: i, ii, 1–79, in modern (19th-cent.) pencil. Medieval foliation in roman numerals, together with ‘f.’ (folio), in upper right-hand margins.

Layout

Ruling (fols 1r–74r, l. 4) in hard point, one column of 29 or 30 lines. Ruled space c.135–138 × 76–80 mm.

Hand(s)

main text (item 1): late protogothic script, Italy, s. xiiex, by a single hand, above top line. Marginalia and corrections added by scribe and contemporary hands. Headers, in a hand of s. xivex or s. xv, which also added foliation. (Items 2–6) Each item in a different, contemporary or younger hand (hands 2–6).

Provenance and Acquisition

Mainz, Carthusian abbey of St Michael: the late 14th-cent. ex-libris inscription at the lower margin of fol. 1r: ‘Liber carthusiensium moguncie’.

William Laud, 1573–1645: Ex-libris, dated 1638, at the lower margin of fol. ii verso.

Given to the Bodleian as part of his third donation, dispatched on 28 June 1639.
