The original binding of stamped leather on oak boards is stated in the sale catalogue to have been that of Lorenzo de' Medici (d. 1492): but this has gone.

Purchased in 1860 at an auction at Sotheby's (sale lot no. 306) on June 20-21, 1860, and described as 'formerly in the archives of two princely Roman Families'. Bought for £4 10s.
