ff. ii-iv blank. f. irv is a waste leaf from a slightly larger book of similar date to I, written upside down in 2 cols, lacking decoration. From near the beginning of a grammatical treatise. On f. ivv is a neat and formal table of contents to the whole book, using the foliation.

The edges savagely retrimmed and spattered with red.
Foliation: Contemporary foliation in red, 1-316, 333-68 (352).

Collation

A4, 1-358, 364, 37-408 / 41-312, B4; catchwords; quire-signatures of the usual late medieval form, mostly cropped. Two quires were missing after 40 before the present binding.

Binding

Standard Merton s. xvii; sewn on five bands; formerly chained from the usual position.

History

Provenance and Acquisition

Made in England, probably not at the College long before 1600. At the head of f. 355 is ‘prec’ xxx s.’, s. xv. Near the head of f. i is the James no. ‘4’ (wrongly), twice, s. xvii in. On f. ivvis the College bookplate and ‘N. 4. 10. Art:’, s. xvii, repeated inside the front board, where it is canc. and replaced with ‘C. 1. 10 (XLIX)’ in red. ‘10’ is inked on the foredge.

Several small, neat cursive hands, anglicana, secretary and a mixture.

Decoration

On f. 1 a 7-line initial in colours and gold, with 3-sided floral border, in English style of s. xv; blue initials flourished in red; red underlining, highlighting and paraphs, which are used for the running heads.
