Collation

1–1012, 118, 12–2112; framed catchwords; quire-signatures of the usual late medieval form in red, mostly cropped.

Layout

Frame-ruled with crayon in 2 cols; written in c. 50 lines. Running heads between ruled lines.

Hand(s)

Two similar professional scribes: (1) art. 1; (2) arts 2–3. The first writes an archaizing gothic rotunda bookhand. The second is English, writing bookhand with some anglicana letter-forms.

Decoration

Large and handsome red and blue initials, flourished in the same colours and violet, with long marginal extensions; blue initials flourished in red; red or blue paraphs; red underlining of lemmata.

Binding

s. xix ex., half-bound in vellum with buckram sides; sewn on seven bands, fols. i and 249 are blank paper binding leaves. On fol. 1, near the foot of the foredge, are marks possibly of a small iron chain-staple.

See MS 58. Inside the front board is modern ‘Merton College Library / N. 5. 3. Art.’, the second canc. and replaced with ‘G. 2. 2 (LVII)’ in red. ‘3’ is inked on the foredge.
