Collation

A4(4 canc.), 1–218, 224(3–4 canc.), a singleton; framed catchwords; quire-signatures of the usual late medieval form, mostly cropped.

Layout

Ruled with fine pencil in 2 cols of 51 lines.

Hand(s)

Two French scribes, writing bastarda, the second beginning at quire 12.

Decoration

Blue initials flourished in red; red or blue paraphs. Red paraphs accompany the running heads.

Binding

Standard Merton s. xvii, rebacked and repaired by Maltby in 1953, sewn on six bands; formerly chained from the usual position on the rear board. fols. i and 171 were formerly pastedowns; on fol. 171, near the foot, is the mark of the large brass chain-staple; also the marks of two strap-pins.

Provenance and Acquisition

At the head of fol. iiiv‘Liber domus scolarium de Merton’ ex dono Magistri Henrici Seuer sacre pagine professoris ac custodis eiusdem incathenatus ad communem usum sociorum in libraria studere uolencium anno Domini MCCCCLXVI.’ For Sever, warden 1455–71, see MS 6.

Inside the front board is a sheet of paper with titles, s. xvii, ‘G. 3. 6 (LXXX)’ in red, and the College bookplate. ‘14’ is inked on the foredge.
