Collation

A4, 1–212, 36, 4–612, 712 (+ 1 after 12), 8–2112, 2210, 2320, 24–612, 278(5 canc.); catchwords in frames which are sometimes patterned.

Layout

Ruled with crayon in 2 cols of 66 lines. Most of fol. iv excised.

Hand(s)

To fol. 256v the hand of MSS 163–4; the remainder in a similar but later-looking anglicana hand. The first hand does running heads in capitals.

Decoration

Blue initials flourished in red, the first on fol. 1 with 1-sided border in the colours; red underlining.

Binding

Standard Merton s. xvii, repaired and rebacked; formerly chained from the usual position. The first and last leaves were pastedowns in an earlier binding. Near the foot of fol. 324 are the marks of the large iron chain-staple. Formerly two straps from the front board to clasps at the back. On fol. 320 are the marks of pins in an earlier back board.

Provenance and Acquisition

Part of a set with MSS 163–4.

Near the foot of the last leaves are the marks of the large iron chain-staple.

Inside the front board is a sheet of paper with contents and ‘F. 7, 8’ (canc.), s. xvii, and ‘O. 6. 5. Art:’, canc. and replaced with ‘K. 3. 5 (CLXV)’ in red; the College bookplate.
