History

Origin: 13th century, early ; English

Provenance and Acquisition

The feast of St Augustine of Hippo has an octave in the kalendar and his Translation on 11 October in the book is a proper Office. SS. Ethelbert and Kyneburga point to Hereford. Van Dijk suggested an origin at Beckford Priory, Gloucestershire, referring to fol. 137v.

In the kalendar the dedication was added against 16 October (see also fol. 137v)

MLGB rejects a provenace from the parish church of Rochford. Cf. Summary Catalogue: "From additions to the calendar on fol. 5v it is clear that this Breviary belonged in the 13th cent. to the chapel of 'Racheford', i. e. Rochford in Herefordshire: William Boni, vicar of Rochford, died on 16 Nov., 1262 (fol. 5v). Among the other obits are some of the family of 'dominus Warinus' (foll. 3v, 4, 5), of Anne de Lacy (fol. 3v). and of R. priest of Birford (Burford near Rochford, in Shropshire: fol. 4). 'Henricus de Bradel' died in 1255 (fol. 5v). All these entries are additions. "; also obit of M. persorie, and see 25 Jan.

Apparently acquired between 1613 and 1620.
