Augustinian and Franciscan

Kalendar (fol. 1), copied from an Augustinian exemplar, with Genoese saints; temporale (fol. 7) with general rubrics (fol. 135v) and the order of the mass (fol. 136v: Indutus planeta); sanctorale (fol. 206); common of the saints and the dedication (fol. 257v); votive masses (fol. 284); some later additions (fol. 306v). The missal has been copied from a Franciscan exemplar and has no local feasts.

Square notation on mostly 9 long staves of 3 red lines.

Decoration

Fine miniature, border, historiated and other initials. Close in style tot he Bible, Rome, Bibl. Rossiana, MS. 183. Decoration related to that in in Bentivoglio Bible, Baltimore Walters Art Gallery, W. 151 (formerly H. Y. Thompson MS. 4). (P&A ii. 92, pl. IX)

Some coloured initials (fols. 17, 155, 168, 206, 250, 254), the title page with coloured borders (fol. 7); the beginning of the canon (fol. 151v) with a crucifixion.

History

Origin: 13th century, end ; Italian, North, Genoa (?)

Provenance and Acquisition

The consecration of St. Lawrence’s cathedral (Genoa (?)), is on 10 October, that of Notre-Dame des Doms at Avignon on 8 October.
