Decoration

Fine borders, historiated and other initials (badly mutilated), by the Master of the Vatican Theophylact/of the Della Rovere missals. Fine penwork borders. (Pächt and Alexander ii. 362, pl. XXXIV)

Origin: 15th century, end ; Italian, Rome

Provenance and Acquisition

Perhaps written for use in the diocese of Siena: liturgical evidence in the calendar (15 May, 12 October, 30 October, 1 December, 3 December), although none of the patron saints of the city itself (St. Ansanus, St. Victor) are in red.
