History
Provenance and Acquisition
Beeleigh, Essex, Premonstratensian abbey of St Mary the Virgin and St Nicholas: 'ecclesie sancte Marie et sancti Nicholai De Meldone' (on flyleaf at end, fol. 120, s. xiii). Beeleigh was called Maldon until the thirteenth cent. 'De Meldone' in the inscription is erased and not quite legible, but there can be no doubt about the reading since 'de Meldon'' is scribbled twice below. The inscription is more probably a 'probatio penne' than a formal ex libris. (MLGB3: evidence from an ex-libris inscription or note of gift to an institution).
'Jacobus Riddings vicarius de Penkrich iure habet hunc codicem' (s. xvi/xvii). The numeral 21 inside a box on fol. v is a 17th-cent. Bodleian number. (MLGB3)
