Support: Paper. Watermarks not fully examined for this description; often indistinct; predominantly more than one variant of 'Ochsenkopf mit zweikonturiger Schlange'. Cf. Piccard nos. 161–223 (fols. 64, 78, etc.: on a chainline, c. 174 × 40 mm. , c. 36 mm. between chainlines), no. 494 (fols. 85, 90, 93, 94, c. 178 × 46 mm. , on a chainline, c. 36 mm. between chainlines); also 'Krone mit zweikonturigem Bogel ohne Stern über Kreuz, ohne Beizeichen' (Piccard's type vi) (fols. 31, 33, 36, 37, height c. 145 mm., on a chainline, c. 35 mm. between chainlines); both motifs attested from the late fifteenth century. The front pastedown has a watermark 'Dreiberg mit Kreuz', 140 × 33 mm. of type Piccard vii, nos. 2332–57 or 2396–2414.

Decoration

Space for initial, not filled in, fol. 1r.

Red initial with penwork flourishing in the ink of the text, fol. 2v.

Red initials at the beginning of the other books.

Additions:

Annotated in a slightly later hand as far as fol. 96v.

Binding

Contemporary binding of tawed skin over wooden boards. Clasps and other furniture lost.

Blind-ruled.

Rebacked.

History

Origin: 15th century, late, or 16th century, early (?) ; German

Provenance and Acquisition

Tentatively attributed by Theele, Kramer and Eifler to St Peter's, Erfurt, due to the similarity of the binding to that of MS. Hamilton 4.

Sir William Hamilton, 1788–1856

Presented to the Bodleian Library by his sons and received in 1857.
