Fine lettre bâtarde.

Decoration

Illuminated leaves removed and replaced, leaving some slight offsets (see e.g. fols. 200v, 221v, etc.); spaces left for miniatures on replacement leaves (fols. 158r, 201r, 222r, 260r).

Binding

Bound and decorated as MS. Holkham misc. 49, but with with 'TOM. IV.' on the spine.

History

Origin: Flemish ; c. 1490

Provenance and Acquisition

Written for a member of the Berlaimont family (on whom see Goethals, 1849, (unpaginated)) who married into the Ligne family (with the quartered arms of both families), perhaps Gilles, Seigneur de Berlaimont, Hierges, Péruwelz, and Beauraing, who married Mary de Ligne, Lady of Lens, and Lady of Belœil (Hassall, 1970, 15); remained in the family until the 16th century.
