History

Provenance and Acquisition

Mainz, Carthusian abbey of St Michael: MS. Laud Misc. 221 consists of four different Charterhouse books; presumably all of these originate from France. At least parts B–D were already bound together in the 15th century at the Charterhouse, as evidenced by quire signatures.

Given to the Bodleian as part of his third donation, dispatched on 28 June 1639.

Mainz, Carthusian abbey of St Michael: the 15th-cent. ex-libris inscription at the upper right-hand margin of fol. 1r, following the title: ‘... et pertinet ad fratres Cartusienses prope mag⟨untiam⟩’, affected by trimming; the late 14th-cent. ex-libris inscription at the upper margin of fol. 76v: ‘Iste liber est fratrum cartusiensium iuxta magunciam’; and, in the same hand, at the upper margin of fol. 77v: ‘Iam est liber Cartusiensium maguncie’. Below, in a different hand: ‘Iste liber pertinet ad dominum Guntherum Onikonem sacerdotem et cappellanum in castro lare prope northusen Moguntie dyocesis. quia dominus henricus de pholde. olim prepositus ecclesie Jech. legauit sibi eundem librum in Curia auinionensi romana in remedium anime sue. anno domini Mo. ccco lxxiiijo. xxiij. die mensis Iulii.’ According to this inscription, fascicle A once belonged to Guntherus Onikon, priest and chaplain at castle Lohra near Nordhausen (‘Northusen’), diocese of Mainz; Henricus de Pholde, who had formerly been in charge of the church in Jech, had bequeathed it to him, for the salvation of his soul, at the Curia Romana in Avignon, 23 July 1374. Identifiable as D XXIII T in cat. ii.

Bernardus Massiliensis, Informatio regularis

With prologue (Hauréau, Initia, 4. 216vb, this copy only). The text is laid out in five books, each with a red rubric at the beginning; its author, Bernard monk of Marseille, who names himself in the prologue (see below), cannot securely be identified, but is likely to have belonged to the Abbey of St Victor, Marseille.
