Berthold of Regensburg, Sermons

Selection of sermons mostly from the Rusticanus de sanctis and De communi sanctorum, two from the Sermones ad religiosos collections, see printed catalogue for items listed in full (Casutt, Predigten Bertholds, 33 (no. 167); Schneyer 1. 478–92 and 497f., citing the present MS. at pp. 493 and 504). Contemporary parchment pieces inserted between leaves containing sermons by Nicholas de Gorran (fol. 22*r), Servasanctus de Faenza (fols 158*r and 424*v) and others.

Support: parchment; bookmark made of blue thread sewn into the outer centre marks the beginning of the Communale or Sanctorale respectively. Six small contemporary parchment pieces inserted between leaves (fols 2/23 (the small stub between 14/15); 50/51 and 58/59; 76/77 and 80/81; 158/159 and 168/169; 173/174 and 177/178; 424/425 and 432/433) containing sermons.

Dimensions (leaf): c.176–84 × 131–42 mm.
Foliation: i, 1–444, in modern (19th-cent.) pencil. Near-contemporary foliation in red arabic numerals at the top centre of rectos.

Ruling in ink or lead point, (fols 200v–201r) in both; two columns of 31 or 32 lines. Ruled space c.137–51 × 97–104 mm.

German textualis, s. xivin, by six hands: 1) (fols 1ra–36vb, l. 12; 94va, l. 20–98ra, l. 13; 145ra–193va, l. 7; 230ra–255rb and 313va–444rb); 2) (fols 36vb, l. 14–94va, l. 19 and 255va– 277va); 3) (fols 98ra, l. 13–132vb); 4) (fols 133ra–144vb); 5) (fol. 193va, l. 7–vb); 6) (fols 194ra– 228va and 278ra–313rb). Marginalia in contemporary and later hands; some hands s. xv are from the Mainz Charterhouse.

Provenance and Acquisition

Mainz, Carthusian abbey of St Michael: the late 14th-cent. ex-libris inscription at the upper centre of fol. 444v: ‘Iste liber est Cartusiensium prope mogunciam’ (partly boxed in).

William Laud, 1573–1645: Ex-libris inscription, dated 1638, at the lower margin of fol. i verso.

Given to the Bodleian as part of his third donation, dispatched on 28 June 1639.
