History

Provenance and Acquisition

Mainz, Carthusian abbey of St Michael: Composed of two fascicles of different dates, MS. Laud Misc. 319 is likely to have already existed in its current make-up when in the possession of the Mainz Charterhouse, at the latest in the late 14th century.

William Laud, 1573–1645: Ex-libris inscription, dated 1638, at the lower margin of fol. 2r.

Given to the Bodleian as part of his third donation, dispatched on 28 June 1639.

Decoration

Flourished initial in blue and red (fol. 43ra).

Coloured initials in red.

Rubrication by the scribe and in a hand of s. xv from the Mainz Charterhouse.

Drawings in lead point in the margins, mostly leaves, occasionally initials (fols 52v, 61r, 62v, 63v, 64r and 71r); Christ crucified, with halo (fol. 62v).
