History

Origin: 13th century, third quarter ; English

Provenance

Winchester, Hampshire, Benedictine cathedral priory of St Peter, St Paul, and St Swithun: "Explicit liber magistri Petri Blesensis de caritate sive de vera amicitia quem scripsit quidam monachus ecclesie Sancti Swithuni Wintonie F[rat]er W[...]s d[e] [...]a", on fol. 73v, all from "Quem" being partly erased. Since there is no change of hand at this point it seems possible that the inscription is taken over from the exemplar. The last word probably begins "Longe", followed by about 4 letters and "a". (MLGB3: evidence from locally specific contents, including obits, scribbles, etc.).

Later at Durham, Benedictine cathedral priory of St Cuthbert: "Liber sancti Cuthberti et Ricardi Bell, prioris Dunelm." "Iste liber assignatus novo armariolo in claustro ecclesie Dunelm. per venerabilem patrem magistrum Johannem Aukland, priorem eiusdem ecclesie." On fol. 8r: "Emyldon". Letter mark ‘E’ (fol. 8r) (MLGB3: evidence from an ex-libris inscription or note of gift to an institution).

Archbishop Laud 1633 (MLGB3).
