Origin: 12th century, third quarter ; English

Provenance and Acquisition

Ford, Devon, Cistercian abbey of St Mary the Virgin: Two erased inscriptions at end: 1) "Hic est liber ecclesie sancte marie de [...]a" (s. xii 2 ). 2) "Hic est liber sancte m. de fordo quod Knygh" (s. xiv). The 2nd inscr. is legible by u. v. light. In the 1st f or s [?] is the first letter of the place name which is of five letters.
