Support: parchment; stitching in natural-coloured thread preserved on fols 46, 59 & 62 only, (fols 35 & 55) remnants of it (stitching holes). Three bookmarks made of parchment strips glued to the outer margins of fols 28 (sic), 49 & 83 to indicate the beginning of bks 2–4.
i (17th-cent.) + 99 leaves
Dimensions (leaf): c.200–07 × 146–57 mm.
Foliation: i, 1–99, in modern (19th-cent.) pencil.

Collation

i 12-2 | ii–v 10 | vi 10-2 | vii & viii 8 | ix 10-2 | x 10-1 | xi 8. A parchment slip incorporated between fols 12/13, the stub between fols 18/19.

Layout

Ruling in ink (fols 29v–30r: lead point), two columns of 30–34 (typically 31) lines. Ruled space c.144–53 × 106–118 mm.

Hand(s)

German textualis, s. xiv1/4, by a single hand; the parchment slip incorporated between fols 12/13 written in the text hand.

Decoration

Flourished initials in red and blue.

Coloured initials in red and blue.

History

Origin: 14th century, first quarter; Germany

Provenance and Acquisition

Mainz, Carthusian abbey of St Michael: the late 14th-cent. ex-libris inscription at the upper right-hand margin of fol. 1r, immediately following the header, which was written in a different hand of s. xivex, employing one-compartment a only and likely from the Mainz Charterhouse, too (the same hand added a note at the head of fol. 83r referring to the table of chapters (bk 4) at the end of the volume): ‘...et est Cartusiensium prope mogunciam’.

William Laud, 1573–1645: Ex-libris, dated 1638, at the lower margin of fol. 1r.

Given to the Bodleian as part of his third donation, dispatched on 28 June 1639.
