History

Provenance and Acquisition

Mainz, Carthusian abbey of St Michael: MS. Laud Misc. 506 consists of four fascicles, mainly containing sermons. The late 14th/early 15th-cent. list of contents at the upper half of fol. i recto (see A) Provenance) suggests that at least fascicles A–C were already bound together at the time when the inscription was inserted, at the Mainz Charterhouse.

Given to the Bodleian as part of his third donation, dispatched on 28 June 1639.

Foliation: (fols 1r–73r) late medieval foliation at the upper right-hand corner of each recto in arabic numerals, added by a hand s. xv from the Mainz Charterhouse, possibly the one responsible for ex-libris inscription on fol. 1r.

Mainz, Carthusian abbey of St Michael: the 15th-cent. ex-libris inscriptions at the upper margin of fol. 1r: ‘Cartusiensium prope magunciam est’, and, in the same hand, of fol. 107v: ‘Liber Cartusiensium prope magunciam’. Identifiable with K V P in cat. ii. A late 14th/early 15th-cent. list of contents at the upper half of fol. i recto, in a hand from the Mainz Charterhouse, evidently listing the items of parts A–C.

Mainz, Carthusian abbey of St Michael: the 15th-cent. ex-libris inscriptions at the upper margin of fol. 183r: ‘Iste liber est Carthusiensium prope mogunciam’, and (in the same hand?) at the lower margin of fol. 184r: ‘Iste liber est fratrum Carthusiensium prope Mogunciam’; at the lower margin of fol. 244r, following the colophon: ‘[...] | Et est fratrum carthusiensium prope mogunciam’, and of fol. 244v, in faint ink: ‘Iste liber est domus sancti michahel prope Mogunciam’.
