Figural, zoo-anthropomorphic, ornamental and geometric decorative initials.

Binding

Brown tanned calf over laminated pulpboard for Abp. Laud, 1637–1639.

Traces of former binding furniture: rust marks and holes in the corners, from four bosses (fols. 1r–4v, 198v–200v).

History

Origin: 12th century, late or 13th century, early ; Italian Based on script and decoration.

Provenance and Acquisition

Mainz, Charterhouse St Michael: late 14th-century ex-libris inscription at the lower margin of ff. 1r and 200r.

William Laud, 1573–1645: his ex-libris inscription, dated 1638, at the lower margin of fol. 1r.

Given to the Bodleian as part of his third donation, dispatched on 28 June 1639.
