History

Provenance and Acquisition

The present Bible book is composed of four different 12th-century parts, possibly together since the late 1630s only.

William Laud, 1573–1645: his ex-libris inscription, dated 1638, at the lower margin of fol. 1r.

Given to the Bodleian as part of his third donation, dispatched on 28 June 1639.

Provenance

Eberbach, Cistercian Abbey of the Virgin Mary: marginal annotations in identical style to those in MS. Laud Lat. 28 (by the same scribe(s) as this section of the present manuscript) and MS. Laud Misc. 244 (with Eberbach ex libris). Perhaps identifiable as D 10 in the Eberbach catalogue of 1502 ('Epistole canonice initium Non est ordo aput grecos': N. Palmer, Zisterzienser und ihre Bucher (1998), 235). Although this entry might appear to describe a volume with text only, it concludes a series entries relating to glossed Biblical books. The incipit of the present manuscript is 'Non ita est ordo apud grecos'.
