History

Origin: 13th century, end, and 14th century

Provenance and Acquisition

Durham, Benedictine cathedral priory of St Cuthbert: 'Iste liber constat [ . . . ] Ricardo byllyngham ex dono domini W. Seton' (fol. 4r). On fol. 177v in the top margin is 'Domino Ricardo Byllyngham monacho ecclesie cathedralis Dunelm' Oxon' studenti'. Both inscriptions erased and read under ultra-violet light. Richard Bellingham was at Durham College, Oxford, 1446/7–1456/7 (BRUO 189). (Medieval stamped binding, late 15th cent.; no chain-mark.) (MLGB3: evidence from an inscription of ownership by an individual member of a religious house (which may not, however, be evidence for institutional ownership)).

Sancroft. Tanner. (MLGB3)

Thomas Tanner, 1674–1735

Bequeathed by him to the Bodleian in 1735.
