Origin: 14th century, late (after 1373) ; England, Devon

Provenance and Acquisition

The coloured sketches of arms in the initials are (i) sable, a fess counter-embattled between three catherine wheels or (Brantingham); (ii) or, three piles in point azure (Guy de Brien); (iii) argent, three fusils conjoined in fess gules (Montague); (iv) sable, a sword in bend sinister, hilted and pommelled or, surmounted by a key in bend of the last, wards in chief (dean and chapter of Exeter)
