White leather on boards, with tags at top and bottom; bosses and most of the clasp gone, 13th-cent. (?) English work.

History

Origin: 12th century, second quarter ; English, Bury St. Edmunds

Provenance and Acquisition

Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, Benedictine abbey of St Edmund, King and Martyr: 'Liber sancti Ӕdmundi'; 'A.31'. Medieval, probably contemporary binding. The old outer jacket appears now to be doing duty as the cover of MS Laud Misc. 233. (MLGB3: evidence from an ex-libris inscription or note of gift to an institution).
