History
Provenance and Acquisition
At the head of f. 123v, written with a stylus, ‘Iste .x. pecie 9 originalium uendantur pro viii sol’’. On f. 230v ‘Caucio ⟨magistri Iohannis de Re⟩nham exposita in cista de Roburi pro ⟨...⟩ | in die Mercurii proxima post festum sancte Agathe anno domini MCCCXLVI’, and other erased cautio notes, including ‘⟨Caucio Iohannis ?Wordeham ... / millesimo CCC ... ⟩’, and ‘⟨Supplementum ... magistris I. de Renham et Rich’ de Byllingham⟩’. John Reynham (BRUO 1570-1), fellow 1335-58, was chancellor of Oxford University 1361-3, d. 1376. Billingham (BRUO 188-9) was fellow in 1344, still in 1361, the latest date at which he is known to have lived. At the head of f. 2, cropped by the binder, is ‘Liber domus ⟨scolarium de Merton’ in Oxon’ ex legato Magistri Iohannis Raynham sacre pagine professoris⟩ uniuersitatis Oxon’ et quondam socii eiusdem domus cuius anime propicietur Deus Amen.’ On f. 1v is a table of contents and ‘N. 2. 6. Art:’, s. xvii. The same hand writes the same shelf-mark inside the front board, where it is canc. and replaced with ‘B. 2. 6 (XVIII)’ in red. A sheet of paper has another table of contents, s. xvii, canc. with a cross-reference to that on f. 1v. The College bookplate.
