The edges retrimmed, cropping the running heads, and spattered with red.

Collation

A bifolium, 110, 24(4 canc.) / 310, 46, 5–68, 710(8 canc.), 8–188, 1910, 20–348 / 354, 366, 372, 384; catchwords; the quires originally numbered at the end, much later (s. xvii?) at the beginning. Quires 1–2, 35–7 were added s. xv to replace lost leaves.

Layout

Ruled with pencil in 44–7 long lines.

Binding

Standard Merton s. xvii; sewn on four bands; formerly chained from the usual position. Fols. i and 288 were pastedowns in an earlier binding. Near the foot of fol. 288 is the mark of the large iron chain-staple.

History

Provenance and Acquisition

On fol. iiv ‘Liber domus scolarium de Mertone ex dono Magistri Henrici Seuer sacre pagine professoris ac custodis eiusdem incathenatus in libraria ad communem usum ibidem studere uolencium anno Domini M. CCCC. lxviii’; ‘B lier .19us.’, in the usual hand (see MS 60). For Sever, warden 1456–71, see MS 6.

At the head of fol. 1 is the James no. ‘134’, s. xvii in. Inside the front board is a title, s. xvii, and ‘O. 8. 18. Art:’, canc. and replaced with ‘H. 1. 17 (203a)’ in red; the College bookplate.
